Box Score

RENSSELAER, Ind.--Lewis University women's volleyball head coach Karen Lockyer moved within one win of recording her 700th career victory as she guided the Flyers to their first conference win of the season.

Lockyer notched career win number 699 after Lewis topped the Pumas (7-11, 3-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference) in four games. The Flyers (8-6, 1-3 GLVC) posted a 33-31, 30-26, 22-30, 30-27 victory to end a four-match losing streak.

Sophomore Theresa Nugent led three Lewis players in double-digit kills. Nugent tallied a team-high 18 kills, while junior Rochelle Ruen added 14 kills and senior Rory Harrison had 13 kills. Nugent and Ruen both recorded double-doubles as they had 11 and 10 digs, respectively. Ruen also added five blocks to aid the Lewis defense.

Harrison posted nine blocks (two solo, seven assists) for the most blocks in a match by a Lewis player this season. In addition, Maggie Haen amassed a match-high 21 digs.

Setter Andrea Morrone produced a solid all-around match with 48 assists, 13 digs and three kills.

Lewis had seven more digs than Saint Joseph's (82-75), but lost the statistical battle in hitting percentage (.181-.220), blocks (11-12), aces (7-8) and kills (60-63). However, the Flyers were able to lay claim to the most important statistical category--the win column.

Lewis' victory gives them an important conference win early in the season. The team's first three GLVC matches were against, arguably, its three toughest conference foes (Southern Indiana, SIU Edwardsville and Indianapolis). The GLVC Tournament format changed this season and just six of the league's 11 teams qualify for the GLVC tournament. As a result, the Flyers victory came in a near must-win situation.

After two straight road trips, Lewis will return home to host its first GLVC match of the season. Wisconsin-Parkside will visit Neil Carey Arena at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29.
