Aug. 26, 2005 LAKEWOOD, Colo.--The Lewis University women's volleyball team opened the 2005 season with a swift 3-0 victory over Texas Woman's University at the Mile High Classic hosted by Colorado Christian College. The Flyers (1-0) rode a balanced attack to a 30-24, 30-26, 30-19 victory over the Pioneers (0-1). Five Lewis players tallied at least five kills in the match. A stingy defense also carried the Flyers to victory as they posted nine team blocks and 50 digs. "For our first match of the season, I was pleased with how we played," said Lewis head coach Karen Lockyer. "I expected Texas Woman's to be one of the stronger teams at this tournament, so to come away with a three-set win is encouraging." Junior Theresa Nugent paced the Flyer attack with 11 kills. She also added one solo block and three block assists. Freshman Aubrey Dondlinger started in her collegiate debut and registered eight kills. Junior Sarah McKinney posted seven kills, two blocks and seven digs, while sophomore Becca Lisle had six kills and a team-high five blocks. Sophomore setter Andrea Morrone handed out 22 assists and led the team to a .223 hitting percentage. She also had five kills and 10 digs. Senior Abby Hodge and sophomore Stacey Hameister shared match-high dig honors with 13 digs apiece. Lewis continues play in the Mile High Classic with a match against Chadron State (Neb.) at 4 p.m. MST. The Flyers will face Central Oklahoma at 8 a.m. and tournament host Colorado Christian at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 27. |
