PENSACOLA, Fla.--The Lewis University women's volleyball team opened the 2004 season with a four-game victory over Mesa State at the University of West Florida Comfort Inn-Vitational. The Flyers' youthful lineup carried them to their 30-27, 30-19, 28-30, 32-30 win. Sophomore Theresa Nugent paced the team with 18 kills, four aces, 10 digs and a .318 hitting percentage. Freshman Jessica Lockhart contributed 13 kills and nine digs in her collegiate debut, while sophomore Lindsay Grim tallied eight kills and a team high seven blocks. Senior libero Maggie Haen recorded four service aces and had a match-high 18 digs as the only upperclassmen starter. Keys to the Lewis win were its offense and serving; Lewis outhit Mesa State .234 to .133 and served 12 aces. The Flyers (1-0) will continue play in the tournament Friday and Saturday. Lewis faces Adelphi at 4:30 p.m. Friday and Montevallo and West Alabama on Saturday. |
