Romeoville, Ill. - The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Tuesday that Lewis University's Katie Hargrove (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) has been named the GLVC Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the period ending April 19th. "That is awesome for Katie," Lewis head women's tennis coach Brett Bridel said. "We really count on her and she has done a tremendous job this season. She is a tough competitor and real fighter on the court." In dual matches against both Quincy and Missouri-St. Louis, Hargrove collected a pair of wins in singles at No. 3 singles and paired up with teammate Melanie Sandberg (Motala, Sweden/Platenskolan/Truman College) for two victories at No. 1 doubles. Hargrove and Sandberg each won two matches in the Flyers' 5-4 win over Quincy on April 17th. They upended Quincy's Anele Novak and Lauren Henry, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles, while Hargrove claimed a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Michelle Bertelsman at No. 3 singles. Against UMSL, Hargrove was the only Flyer to win in singles action, claiming the 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 come-from-behind win over Altanzul Gombo at No. 3 singles. She and Sandberg added an 8-6 win over UMSL's Stephanie Thompson and Pujitha Bandi. The O'Fallon, Illinois native has now been victorious in five of her last six singles matches to improve to 16-9 overall and has now amassed an overall mark of 15-8 in doubles play. Lewis opens GLVC Tournament play on Friday morning, as the Flyers square off with No. 1 seed Drury at 11 a.m. A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 10th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the fifth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
