MACOMB, Ill. - Lewis University senior Allison Schmitz turned in Lewis' top singles performance with a second-place effort in Flight A at the second annual Hinds-Kellogg Classic, Friday and Saturday on the campus of Western Illinois University.

Schmitz defeated Drew Kristal of Southeast Missouri State, 6-2, 6-0 in the round of 16, then beat Zi Wang of Western Illinois 7-6 (6), 6-3 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Schmitz topped Kari Kastenholz of Wisconsin-Milwaukee 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (6), but she fell to Bryce Kristal of Southeast Missouri State 6-3, 6-1 in the final.

Senior Erin Piechocinski began with a win in Flight B, defeating Yana Meinert of Western Illinois 7-5, 6-3, but she got knocked of out the winner's bracket in the next round, falling to Jade Stanlick of Olivet Nazarene 6-1, 6-1. Piechocinski settled for eighth place after slipping to Laura Horning of Southern Illinois Edwardsville 6-3, 7-6 (4) in a 5-8 match and Ashley Clark of Western Illinois 6-1, 6-2 in the seventh/eighth place match.

In Flight C, senior Melanie Sandberg finished in 11th place. She lost to Cassie Frantz of Monmouth (4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (5)), Stephanie Clark of Southern Illinois Edwardsville (6-1, 6-4) before topping Kim Wegner of Monmouth (6-1, 6-1).

Junior Jordan Lynde competed in Flight D and took seventh place. She dropped out of the winner's bracket with a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Amy Ochs of Truman State, and she fell in a 5-8 match to Erin Kelley of Upper Iowa (4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (3) before rebounding with a win over Sarah Harris of Quincy 7-6 (6), 6-3.

Freshman Ann Oberbruner represented Lewis in Flight E. She opened with a win over Emily Isaacs of Monmouth 6-2, 6-2 before losing in a quarterfinal match to Sarah Rhein of Southern Illinois Edwardsville 6-3, 6-4. In the consolation bracket, Oberbrunner fell in a 5-8 match to Katie Rodewald of Upper Iowa 6-7 (3), 6-3, 1-0 (3), and she finished tied for seventh in the flight.

Freshman Clare Kessler and junior Michelle Wright played in Flight F. Kessler won her quarterfinal match against Nicole Henry of Upper Iowa 6-4, 6-1, but fell in a semifinal match to Megan Marsot of Quincy 6-2, 6-3. In a battle for third place, Kessler bested Faith Atherton of Upper Iowa 6-2, 6-2.

Wright slipped in her first two matches to Michelle Bertelsman of Quincy (6-4, 6-2) and Maggie Fairchild of Truman State (6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (3)), but recovered with a win over Sarah McLinden of Monmouth 6-2, 6-1 to take 11th place in the flight.

In doubles action, the duo of Schmitz and Sandberg took third in Flight A, Piechocinski and Lynde claimed sixth in Flight B and Oberbrunner and Kessler finished eighth in Flight C. Wright teamed with Atherton of Upper Iowa in Flight D. They finished in fourth place.

The meet concluded the Flyers' fall season.
