Julie Wingerter Named To Academic All-District Five Softball Third Team

May 8, 2009

Romeoville, Ill. - The College Sports Information Directors of America announced on Thursday (May 7) that Lewis University's Julie Wingerter (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) has been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Five Softball Team.

A senior pitcher, Wingerter owns a 3.78 cumulative GPA in mathematics and is 9-4 in the circle for the Flyers with 71 strikeouts.

"We're very proud of Julie," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "She's one of our top student-athletes on our team and she has played at a very high level this season as well. It's a well deserved honor."

Earlier this season, Wingerter was named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II Softball Pitcher of the Week following her no-hitter against Wilmington (DE) on March 1st.

The Academic All-District teams are chosen by CoSIDA members and sponsored by ESPN The Magazine. District 5 covers Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Minnesota, and the College Division is comprised of student athletes from NCAA Division II and III and the NAIA.

To be eligible for Academic All-District consideration, a student athlete must have reached sophomore eligibility, have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher and be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials.

Lewis returns to action on Saturday, as the Flyers square off with Ferris State in a NCAA Midwest Regional showdown at 12:30 p.m. (EST).

A Catholic University sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The mid-sized university is being honored for the fifth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report. For more information please visit www.lewisu.edu.
