Game 2 Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.--For the first time this season, the Lewis University softball team was shutout in consecutive games.

The Flyers (26-19, 11-7 Great Lakes Valley Conference) dropped a twinbill with conference rival SIU Edwardsville 8-0 and 3-0. The 14th-ranked Cougars (39-9, 15-1 GLVC) run-ruled Lewis in five innings in the opener.

Junior Robin Martz sparked the Flyers' day with a 5 for 8 performance that included a perfect 3 for 3 in game 1. Martz tallied three of Lewis' four hits in the opener.

Game 1 saw SIUE jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and build its margin to 4-0 following a two-run home run by Alicia DeShasier in the bottom of the second. SIUE ended game 1 early with four more runs in the fifth inning.

DeShasier (14-4) was in the circle as well in game 1, going the distance with four strikeouts, four walks and four hits.

Shannon Roney (10-7) took the opening game loss pitching four innings and allowing six runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three.

Kristen Porzel (4-7) was credited with the loss in game 2 despite pitching well. She surrendered just three hits, but two of them were solo home runs. She pitched six innings and struck out a pair in the loss.

Lewis had five runners reach third base in the game, but couldn't find the hit it needed to bring the runners home.

Freshman Mallory Paine broke out of a 2 for 15 slump with two hits in three at bats in the nightcap.

The Flyers finish regular-season play with a doubleheader at Southern Indiana Sunday, May 1. Lewis is in a three-way battle with Wisconsin-Parkside and Indianapolis for third place in the GLVC. All three schools are 11-7 in the conference while USI is 9-7.
