ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - After falling 8-1 in the opener, No. 8 Lewis received a dominant three-hit shutout effort from Courtney Lyons in the nightcap to defeat Quincy 3-0 and lock up the top seed for the upcoming Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament. Lewis (31-10, 19-5), enters the GLVC tournament as the No. 1 seed for the first time since the 2001 season. The Flyers will face eight seed Indianapolis in the opening round on Friday, May 4 at Noon. In the game two win over Quincy on Sunday afternoon, Lyons struck out four and improved to 13-3 for the season. Kristy Vanek's two-RBI single in the bottom of the third put Lewis on the board, and Lisa Gartland added a solo home run in the sixth. The Hawks collected 14 hits in game one, scoring their first two runs in the second on back-to-back homers from Missy Weaver and Audra Heimer. Quincy added five runs in the third and scored one more time in the seventh when Weaver belted her second home run of the game. Carla Musillo's second homer of the season accounted for the Flyers' only run in the game. She cleared the fence in left field with nobody out in the sixth. Musillo went 3-for-6 on the afternoon. |
