Game Two Box Score

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - No. 8 Lewis used the power of the long ball to stage a stunning nine-inning comeback win over one of the conference's top pitchers, but the Flyers fell in the nightcap, settling for an 8-7 and 2-1 doubleheader split with Saint Joseph's Saturday afternoon at the Lewis Softball Field.

The Flyers are now 24-7 (13-3), while Saint Joseph's sits at 21-15 (8-4).

Down 7-2 in the fifth inning of game one, Lewis hammered four home runs over the next five innings to tie and eventually win the game.

Kelly Dianis led off Lewis' fifth with a solo shot, her team-leading sixth of the season. In the Flyers' sixth, Beth Shelus crushed a two-run blast, her second of the year, to make it 7-5 Saint Joseph's.

Lisa Gartland came up with one on and one out in the bottom of the seventh and launched a two-run bomb to send the game to extra innings, and after a scoreless eighth, Carla Musillo jumped on the first pitch she saw in the ninth and sent it over the fence in left for the game-winning homer.

Gartland (4-1) earned the win in the circle after coming in and completely shutting down what was a red-hot Pumas' offense. The Pumas had pounded 13 hits through the first six innings. Gartland retired the side in order in the seventh, faced four batters in the eighth and four in the ninth. She struckout one, walked one and hit one batter.

Sara Somogyi (15-8) suffered the loss, despite striking out 11 Flyers in the game.

Christina Willis, who went 4-for-4 in the game, knocked in Lewis' first two runs with a single down the left field line in the second inning.

Game two was scoreless until the fourth inning when Jessica Lynch hit a solo home run for the Pumas. Lewis answered in bottom half of the same inning. Gartland led off with a triple, and Courtney Lyons brought her home with a sacrifice fly to center.

The game remained knotted 1-1 until the Pumas' seventh. Michelle Hammons opened the inning with a single and scored when Stephanie Kickels hit a shallow pop fly down the left field line that fell in for a hit.

Jesse Privet (5-6) earned the win for Saint Joseph's, allowing only four hits and striking out seven in the complete-game effort. Julie Wingerter (6-3) took the loss for Lewis. She struck out five.

The Flyers return to action on Sunday, facing Indianapolis for two beginning at Noon.
