ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The defending conference champion UW-Parkside Rangers held only a slight 6-5 edge in shots on goal, but they made two of them count, topping the Lewis women's soccer team 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Rangers scored 3:01 into the game. Shannon Becker fired a cross from the top right of the 18-yard box to the left post. Kristen Benson was there on the other end to put it in the back of the net. UW-Parkside scored their second goal of the game at 18:21. Becker dropped a corner kick into a crowded box enabling Kahlil Cheng to score. Both teams possessed the ball almost equally. Each squad earned seven corner kicks and the Rangers held only a 15-13 edge in total shots. Senior Amy Foran (Batavia, Ill/Batavia) led Lewis with three shots, two on goal. "We learned a lesson today that if you take a punch from a team like Parkside you need to be able to deliver it right back," head coach Chris Koenig said. "The second goal really hurt us. If it's a 1-0 score it's a different contest with the chances we had in the second half." UW-Parkside improves to 7-3-2 and 6-3-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Lewis falls to 3-9-2 and 2-8-1 in the GLVC. The Flyers travel to Illinois-Springfield on Sunday at noon. |
