Freshman Bethanee Taylor scored her second goal of the season in the first half.

Women's Soccer Nearly Pulls Off Third Shocker of the Year

Final Stats

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.--The Lewis University women's soccer team has been the surprise squad in the Great Lakes Valley Conference this season and the Flyers were poised for their third major upset as it had conference-leading and 14th-ranked SIU Edwardsville on the ropes.

Freshman Bethanee Taylor scored a first-half goal, her second of the year, to give Lewis (5-8-2, 2-4-2 GLVC) a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Allison Wilkerson served the ball into the goal area where Taylor scooped up the loose ball and pounded it into the back of the net.

After Taylor's goal at 32:08, SIUE (12-2, 8-0 GLVC) scored the equalizer six minutes later. At 38:20, Lewis' Sarah Lyons was whistled for a foul in the box and SIUE's Kristine Armstrong scored on the ensuing penalty kick.

The teams played scoreless for the rest of regulation. SIUE tallied the game winner three minutes into overtime when Lindsey Kampwerth connected on a header six yards in front of Lewis' goal.

Lewis goalkeeper Lindsay Frederick registered seven saves.

"We played really well," said Lewis head coach Bill Bruno. "The stats may not show it, but we controlled play for good stretches of the game. The team has shown that it can play with the best teams in the conference. Hopefully, we can go on a little run to end the season and earn a spot in the conference tournament. I think if we can make the tournament, we'll be one of those teams that other schools will be wary of facing."

Lewis sits in 10th place in the GLVC, with eight teams qualifying for the conference tournament. Three of the Flyers' final five games are against teams that are ahead of them in the standings, including Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's who are tied for eighth with 4-4 league records.
