EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - A late flourish by conference foe Southern Illinois Edwardsville turned a one-goal game into a 4-0 victory over Lewis Sunday afternoon. The Cougars took a 1-0 advantage at 18:16 on a header by Elizabeth Valenti off a cross by Kelly Limpert. The Flyers couldn't find the back of the net despite outshooting the Cougars 6-5 in the first half. After halftime the Cougars turned the momentum in their favor by outshooting the Flyers 12-3 in the second. The Cougars started to turn these shots into goals at 76:02 when Kate Yearian scored off a 30-yard cross from Amy Millon. Just over four minutes later at 80:04 Kiara Akpore scored to extend the Cougars' advantage to three goals. Yearian scored her second goal of the game at 81:59, assisted by Elizabeth Valenti, to give the game its final of score of 4-0. Freshman Jessica Summers-Hernandez recorded three shots on goal to lead the Flyers. Junior Bethanee Taylor and sophomore Amy Foran both recorded two shots on goal for Lewis. The Cougars' Kelly Limpert received the game's only yellow card. SIUE held the edge in corner kicks (3-1) and committed nine fouls to Lewis' 7. The Cougars improved to 5-3-1 (4-2 GLVC) while the Flyers fell to 3-7 (1-5 GLVC). Lewis returns home to face Saint Joseph's on Friday at noon. |
