ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis Flyers earned their first conference victory of the season 2-1 over the Missouri-Rolla Lady Miners Sunday afternoon. The winning goal came at 73:45 by Courtney Kettel on a penalty kick. It was Kettel's fifth goal and second game winning goal of the season. She is a perfect 2-2 on penalty kicks this year. The penalty kick was set up by the speed of sophomore Amy Foran. Foran chased a loose ball into the Lady Miners' box and was tripped by Missouri-Rolla goalkeeper Kelsey Kurilla moments after taking possession. Kurilla received a yellow card and opened the door for Kettel to score the game winning penalty kick. After a scoreless first half it was Foran who gave the Flyers an early lead with a shot into the upper left corner 52:55 (unassisted). She is second on the Flyers in goals with three. The Miners' only goal came at 67:04 on a strike from 22 yards out by Brook Ryan (unassisted). Foran recorded four shots, two on goal. Freshman Jessica Summers-Hernandez and junior Bethanee Taylor recorded a shot on goal. The Flyers held a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. The teams tied in corner kicks (6) and saves (3). Lewis committed 15 fouls to the Lady Miners' 14. Sophomore Jessica McNamara received a yellow card for the Flyers. Kurilla and Sarah Herrig received yellow cards for the Lady Miners. The Flyers improved to 3-5-0 (1-3-0 GLVC) while the Lady Miners dropped to 3-5-0 (0-4-0). Lewis plays at Quincy on Friday at 5 p.m. |
