ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Lewis Flyers played within one goal of No. 1 Grand Valley State for 60 minutes, but it was not enough as the Lakers scored four goals in a span of 12 minutes to pull away with a 5-0 non-conference victory Wednesday afternoon. The Lakers' Ashley Elsass scored the first goal of the game at 12:29 (assisted by Katy Tafler). The game stayed 1-0 until Grand Valley State scored on a header into the crossbar from the right side by Sue Christenson (assisted by Jamie Radley) at 60:10. Katy Tafler scored two-straight goals, at 62:43 and 69:49 (both assisted by Ashley Elsass), to widen the Lakers lead to 4-0. Kristen Eible closed out the scoring at 71:56 on an unassisted goal. Lewis freshman goalkeeper Andrea Iossi recorded six saves. Grand Valley State held the edge in corner kicks (6-1) and shots on goal (12-1). Freshman Jessica Summers-Hernandez recorded the Flyers' only shot on goal. Junior Sarah Ybarra also recorded a shot. The Flyers fell to 2-4 (0-2 GLVC) while the Lakers improved to 6-0 (0-0 GLIAC). Lewis returns home to play two games this weekend. On Friday the Flyers host Missouri-St. Louis and on Saturday they host Missouri-Rolla. Both games start at noon. |
