Hutt's Spectacular Play Leads Lewis to Shutout St. Xavier

Sept. 24, 2003

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Courtney Hutt stopped nine shots, and Jenna Volpi recorded the only goal of the game, as the Lewis University women's soccer team beat Saint Xavier 1-0.

Hutt faced 29 Cougar shots and collected each of their nine shots on goal. A junior who missed much of last season due to injury, Hutt registered her fifth career shutout and first in two years.

Volpi put the Flyers (3-7-0) on the board with her third goal of the season at the 38:04 mark. Sophomore Loren Pellizzari slipped a pass between two defenders to earn her first career assist. Volpi fired from 15 yards out in the right side of the box. The shot dribbled past Saint Xavier (6-3-1) goalie Judy Kazlauskas' right and into the left side of the net.

"Jenna hasn't been able to get to the back of the net lately," said Lewis head coach Bill Bruno. "Hopefully, this will get her back on track as we head into the rest of the conference season."

The Flyers were pressured throughout but held firm to pick up the program's first shutout victory since September 19, 2001.

Bruno made special mention of Hutt's play in the victory, "She hasn't looked this good since her freshman year. She's getting back into her good habits and decision making that made her a good goalie for us two years ago.

"You can see her intensity and desire to win, and she's communicating with the defense better. She had a solid game against Southern Indiana and now this one, so it's good to have her playing well as we head into a big weekend against SIU Edwardsville and Quincy."

The victory also snaps Lewis' five-game losing streak.

The Flyers will travel to SIUE Friday for a conference game at 5:30 p.m., and then will host Quincy Sunday at noon.
