Dec. 19, 2009

Box Score

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Flyers connected on 8-of-19 attempts from behind the arc to defeat Cal Baptist 80-71 in a non-conference road game on Saturday evening.

Lewis' success from long ranged helped them jump out to a 40-25 halftime lead.

Junior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill/Johnsburg) led Lewis with 19 points and eight boards. She made 6-of-7 field goal attempts and stayed hot from the free throw line, connecting on 7-of-8.

Senior Kelly Dianis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) finished with 12 points and four assists. Junior Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) totaled 11 points with six assists. Junior Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) added 10 points. Sophomore Lory Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township/UW-Green Bay) added 10 points off the bench.

Both teams had success getting to the free throw line. Lewis made 26-of-32, while Cal Baptist connected on 22-of-29. The Flyers limited Cal Baptist to 37.9 percent shooting.

"We were pretty balanced today," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "JT (Turpel) came out and looked great. She was in a bit of foul trouble which affected her minutes, but she needed a game like this."

Each team is now 6-4. Lewis is next in action on Dec. 28, in a non-conference contest at Upper Iowa.

A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 9th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the sixth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
