Darcee Schmidt

Flyers And North Dakota Go Down To The Wire

Nov. 24, 2006

Box Score

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Darcee Schmidt scored a team-best 20 points, including 12 in the second half, but the Lewis Flyers came up one shot short in an 80-77 loss to North Dakota, Friday afternoon in thrilling non-conference action.

Down by eight with seven minutes to play, Lewis worked its way back to force a 74-74 tie with 1:27 remaining. Free throws allowed North Dakota to go up by four with 20 seconds to play, but then Lauresha Hawkins nailed a long 3-pointer to pull Lewis within one point with five seconds to play.

Lewis immediately fouled after Hawkins 3-pointer, sending Karla Beck to the line. Beck hit both freebies to put UND up by three, and the lead held as Schmidt's last second three-pointer deflected off the rim.

Along with her 20 points, Schmidt added nine rebounds and two assists. Mary Moskal scored 19 with eight boards, and Kelly Dianis tallied 19 points, hitting 5-of-8 eight from 3-point range. Hawkins totaled 11 points in 20 minutes of action and Brittney Diener had a game-high 10 assists.

Ashley Langen led UND with 25 points and 11 rebounds, while Beck added 20 points. Kierah Kimbrough scored 17 for the Fighting Sioux.

UND controlled the tempo most of the first half and led by 10 at halftime. The Flyers rallied back for a 53-53 tie at the 13:00 mark of the second half and re-tied it three more times over the next several minutes, but never led.

After a Moskal jumper at 10:22 forced the fifth tie of the game, a foul and turnover on the other end gave Lewis the ball back with a chance to take their first lead of the game.

Schmidt spotted up for a jumper but had it blocked by Langen.

After corralling the rebound, the Fighting Sioux found Kelsey Maffin for three points on the other end to regain the lead. The 3-pointer sparked an 8-0 run by the Fighting Sioux, which led 67-59 with 7:00 minutes to play.

The Flyers (3-1) look to get back in the win column on Saturday when they travel to face Minnesota State-Moorhead at 3 pm.
