Nov. 18, 2005

Box Score

ROMEOVILLE - Lewis charged to a 15-point first-half lead, but visiting Lake Superior State chipped away and emerged with an 80-75 victory Friday in the GLVC-GLIAC Challenge.

Utilizing their speed and quickness, the Flyers stormed to a 31-16 cushion just nine minutes into the game. But Lake Superior, behind 18 first-half points from Mandi Johnson, responded with a 27-11 spurt to take a 43-42 lead into the locker room. Johnson finished with a game-high 22 points.

The Lakers (1-0) scored the first six points of the second half before the Flyers (0-1) got back on track. An 11-2 run, capped by a Darcee Schmidt bucket, gave Lewis a 53-51 edge with 12:57 left.

Jaclyn Armstrong, who scored 10 of her 16 points in the second half, buried a 3-pointer at the 10:39 mark that put Lake Superior up 58-55. The Flyers pulled even at 70-all with 2:59 to play and rallied from a seven-point deficit with less than a minute left to trail by just two points, but a turnover in the final seconds denied a chance to tie.

Freshmen Kelly Dianis and Mandie Morelock came off the bench to lead the Flyers with 14 points apiece. Shante Glenn had 12 points and team highs of nine rebounds, eight assists and five steals. Schmidt tallied 12 points and eight rebounds, and Mary Moskal scored 11 points.

Lewis was 19-of-20 at the foul line. The Flyers' 33-28 rebounding advantage included 16 offensive boards.

Lewis hosts Michigan Tech Saturday at 5:30.
