BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - In a game where there were 12 ties and neither team led by more than six points in the second half, a pair of sophomores carried the Lewis University women's basketball team to a 76-71 victory over Ferris State.

Last season, sophomore Mary Moskal made her collegiate debut in grand fashion against the Bulldogs as she tallied 24 points and went 11 of 11 from the field. Moskal reacquainted herself with Ferris State (0-1) Tuesday night as she poured in a career-high 26 points. She was 7 of 9 from the field and recorded career highs at the free-throw line, going 12 of 13. She also had six rebounds and three assists.

Included in Moskal's performance were five straight points that broke a 69-all tie with 3:02 left in the game. She made a pair of free throws and converted a three-point play in the next minute and six seconds to help clinch the game.

Following a layup by Ferris State's Erin Miller that cut the score to 74-71, Lewis senior Cassie Stark buried a pair of free throws with eight seconds left that iced the game.

Sophomore Darcee Schmidt also produced a commanding performance. The 2004 GLVC Newcomer of the Year posted 22 points on 9 of 15 shooting and had six rebounds. She had 14 points and was 5 of 6 from the field at halftime

Lewis (1-1) trailed by nine points in the game's first five minutes, but rebounded to tie the game at 20-20 following a Schmidt 3-pointer at 9:42. The Flyers again would fall behind by nine points with 5:01 left in the half, but a 15-4 burst to end the period gave Lewis a 39-35 halftime lead.

For the game, Lewis shot 50.9 percent from the field and held Ferris State to a 40.3 percent shooting night. The Flyers held a substantial edge at the free-throw line making 18 of 24, while the Bulldogs were 6 of 10.

Stark added a solid game for the Flyers with eight points, five assists and five rebounds. Erin Cox and Tenesha McDaniel chipped in with eight points apiece and had seven and six rebounds, respectively. Brittney Diener helped round out the team effort with eight assists and four rebounds.
