KENOSHA, Wis.--Playing for second place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, the Lewis University women's basketball team jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the first seven minutes and never looked back in a 71-57 victory over Wisconsin-Parkside.

The Flyers (18-9, 15-5 GLVC) were facing Wisconsin-Parkside on the road on senior day. UWP (20-10, 14-6 GLVC) honored seven seniors before the game, but had their day spoiled by the youth of the Flyers.

A junior and a pair of sophomores helped carry Lewis to its eighth straight victory and its 11th in its last 12 games.

Junior Shante Glenn followed a 27-point performance this past Thursday with 26 points and seven rebounds against the Rangers. Glenn was 10 of 17 from the field, including 4 of 4 from the free-throw line and 2 of 3 from 3-point range. She scored 15 points in the second half and was 6 of 8 from the field during the period.

Sophomore Mary Moskal continued the steady play that has been her trademark this season as she scored 18 points and passed out six assists. She was 4 of 7 from the field and 9 of 10 from the free-throw line.

In addition, sophomore Darcee Schmidt chipped in with 13 points and three rebounds and shot 6 of 10 from the field.

Wisconsin-Parkside, who entered the game ranked No. 5 in the Great Lakes Region, hit a 3-pointer and trimmed Lewis' lead to 26-24 with 4:45 to play in the first half, but that was as close as the Rangers would get.

The Flyers ended the half on a 10-2 run to take a 36-26 lead into the lockerroom. Lewis shot 58.3 percent from the field in the half and forced 13 Ranger turnovers.

In the second half, UWP cut Lewis' lead to seven in the opening two minutes after a conventional three-point play from senior Sammy Kromm. However, Glenn answered with a 3-pointer to push the lead back into double digits.

UWP got its deficit back under 10 points with 10:41 to play when Jennifer Luckett's 3-pointer made it 50-41, but Lewis then proceeded to go on a 16-4 run to effectively clinch the game. The burst gave Lewis a 21-point lead, its largest of the game, with 6:35 left in the game.

Lewis wound up shooting 52.5 percent (31 of 59) from the field and was 17 of 19 (89.5 percent) from the free-throw line for the game.

The Flyers have now earned the No. 2 seed in the GLVC tournament. They await the result of the Bellarmine/Southern Indiana game later tonight to determine who they will play in the first round of the conference tournament. Lewis will play Southern Indiana or Kentucky Wesleyan in the tournament first round Friday, March 4.
