Kenosha, Wis. - The 2009 season came to an end for the Lewis University men's cross country team on Saturday morning, as the Flyers placed 16th overall at the 10K NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, hosted by UW-Parkside, at the Wayne E. Dannehl Cross Country Course.

"I thought the guys ran real well today," Lewis head men's cross country coach Dana Schwarting said. "We finished in the same place as last year with more experienced runners, so we have nowhere to go but up from here."

Lewis sophomore Rocky Medero (River Grove, Ill./Guerin Prep) topped the Flyers with a 55th-place finish. Flyer sophomore Scott Tanis (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) narrowly edged teammate Thomas Campbell (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway West) for second-place honors on the squad with a time of 35:29 to Campbell's 35:31.

Junior Seth Schultz (Elmwood, Ill./Elmwood) placed fourth on the Flyers with a mark of 36:23, while freshman Jake Hansen (Waukegan, Ill./St. Joseph's) rounded out the top five with a time of 37:22.

Grand Valley State, led by champion Tyler Emmorey (32:22) won the regional title with 38 points, followed by Saginaw Valley State (88) and Southern Indiana (90). All three teams automatically qualify for the NCAA Men's Cross Country Championship.

A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 10th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the sixth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
