EDWARDSVILLE - Sophomore Larry Anzalone of the Lewis University men's cross country team earned all-region honors Saturday at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championship. The Flyers concluded their season by finishing fifth among 19 squads in the team standings (152 points). Grand Valley State (65), Hillsdale (86), Wayne State (105) and Saginaw Valley State (140) comprised the top four. Anzalone placed ninth among 127 competitors and covered the 10,000-meter course in 32:33.29. The top 15 runners make the all-region team. Sophomore Andy Tremble finished 20th (33:08.72), and freshman John Fry placed 27th (33:19.23). Fry turned in the meet's top finish by a true freshman. Freshman Andrew Northrup (46th, 33:59.29), senior Juan Carrillo (50th, 34:10.16), junior Larry Cardenas (53rd, 34:20.46) and junior Josh Thompson (67th, 34:48.65) also competed for Lewis, which won the Great Lakes Valley Conference title two weeks ago and was the top GLVC team at the regional meet. "It wasn't our day as a team but there were some bright spots," Lewis head coach Bob Schultz said. "Larry Anzalone ran very well, and John Fry, who was our No. 3 runner after being our No. 6 or No. 7 man all season, ran great." |
