Louisville, Ky. - Saturday's Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Cross Country Championship race, hosted by Bellarmine University, did not end how Lewis University men's cross country coach Dana Schwarting envisioned.

The Flyers, led by a 32nd-place finish of 26:48.25 from sophomore Scott Tanis (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) raced to a 9th-place finish of 229 points at the 8K E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park on Saturday morning.

Drury's Jaime Villa Zapatero won the individual race with a mark of 25:00.93, while Southern Indiana won the team title with 36 points.

"It was a pretty bad race across the board," Schwarting said of his team. "Our normal number three runner (Seth Schultz) was sick and finished seventh. I think that affected the rest of our team and it kind of snowballed from there."

Lewis sophomore Rocky Medero (River Grove, Ill./Guerin Prep) was the second Flyer to cross the finish line in 26:52.17, while freshman Thomas Campbell (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) followed in 27:51.55. Lewis freshman Gerardo Medina (Chicago, Ill./DeLaSalle) was fourth on the squad with a mark of 27:55.65, while sophomore John Deutsch (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) rounded out the Flyer Five with a time of 28:48.85.

Lewis returns to action in two weeks, as they participate in the NCAA Regional, hosted by UW-Parkside, in Kenosha, Wis., on November 7th.

A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 10th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the sixth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
