Oct. 23, 2004 ALEXANDRIA, Ky. - The Lewis University men's cross country team is back on top. Led by all-conference performers Andy Tremble and Larry Anzalone, the Flyers captured the team title at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Saturday and put to rest the disappointment of last season's fifth-place finish. The conference championship is the 13th overall and 11th in the past 13 years for Lewis, the 12th-ranked team in NCAA Division II. The Flyers scored 55 points to nip runner-up and defending champion Southern Indiana, which tallied 57 points. Wisconsin-Parkside (76) was third, followed by Southern Illinois Edwardsville (98), Northern Kentucky (124), Indianapolis (161), Bellarmine (163) and Saint Joseph's (197). Tremble, last year's GLVC Freshman of the Year, followed his 14th-place effort of 2003 with a fifth-place finish. He covered the 8,000-meter course in 25:54.67. Anzalone was right behind his teammate in sixth (26:01.40). Juan Carrillo (12th, 26:41.45), Larry Cardenas (15th, 26:49.08) and Andrew Northrup (17th, 26:51.26) joined Tremble and Anzalone in the Lewis scoring group. John Fry (19th, 26:59.16) and Josh Thompson (23rd, 27:11.74) rounded out the Flyers' top seven. Also competing for Lewis were Sinan Khamo (30th, 27:24.76); Darren Orange (31st, 27:25.90); Braulio Benitez (33rd, 27:31.19); John Archer (43rd, 27:53.39); Chris Foley (44th, 27:55.60); Adrian Myers (45th, 27:59.43); Dustin Long (48th, 28:03.90); Brad Fox (56th, 28:18.17); Alberto Villa (60th, 28:20.77); Evan Sather (62nd, 28:23.43); Phil DeSantis (63rd, 28:27.45); Emory Burdette (65th, 28:32.62); Jared Lauer (71st, 28:56.35); Jake Clary (82nd, 29:42.90); Michael Skinner (85th, 29:50.52); Erik Donovan (86th, 29:52.22); Brandon Morreale (90th, 30:14.05); Alex Nemeth (96th, 31:05.90); and Chris Sievers (101st, 32:16.01). Lewis head coach Bob Schultz was named GLVC men's cross country Coach of the Year. Lewis now will prepare for the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championship schedule for Nov. 6 in Edwardsville. The top three teams at the regional meet advance to the NCAA Division II Championship Nov. 20 in Evansville, Ind. |
