EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - If Andy Tremble's performance on Saturday is any indication, the Lewis University senior appears to have a very good chance to repeat as Great Lakes Valley Conference cross country champion. Competing on the same course where the GLVC Championship will be held in two weeks, Tremble finished third among 317 runners at the Border War Championship. He covered the 8,000-meter course in 24:58.17 and led the Flyers to a sixth-place tie in the 30-team field. Andrew Northrup also enjoyed a strong race, finishing 21st in 25:57.46. Larry Anzalone (49th, 26:39.33), Mark Martinez (97th, 27:20.17) and Alberto Villa (101st, 27:22.48) completed the Flyers' scoring group. Also competing for Lewis were Jeff Ritzema, 136th (27:47.24), Kevin Dockemeyer (161st, 28:09.02), Ryan Sather (164th, 28:10.38) and Evan Sather (171st, 28:15.17). "Tremble and Northrup looked great," head coach Rick Wemple said. "Both are ahead of where they were at this point last season. "Martinez continues to make a solid transition from high school to college distances. His time wasn't quite as fast as we hoped it would be, but he gave great effort throughout the race and was our No. 4 finisher. "However, some of our other guys have to step up and show that they want to beat some people," Wemple added. "I feel there is too much complacency for us to get to where we want to be." |
