Flyers drop Clarke, 3-1

March 17, 2006

Box Score

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Drew Pickering's double-double of 21 kills and a career-high 15 digs led the way for Lewis in a 3-1 win (30-20, 30-27, 26-30, 30-24) over Clarke College, Friday night at Neil Carey Arena.

The Flyers improved to 7-11, while Clarke fell to 12-7 for the season.

Pickering's kill and dig totals were both match highs, and he is the second Flyer to record a double-double this season.

David Kelnhofer contributed with 14 kills, and Billy Sahagian added 10 kills with seven blocks (1BS, 6BA). Alex Vigansky, Mykolai Zerebeckyj and Craig Boller each chipped in with seven kills. Vigansky hit a match-best .500, and Jordan Vidovic dished out 53 assists.

The score was knotted 8-8 in the first game before kills by Sahagian, Pickering and Vigansky helped Lewis take a 12-9 advantage and control of the game.

Game two was tied 27-27 when Pickering slammed one down to give Lewis the lead for good. A block by Kelnhofer and Vigansky followed by a kill by Kelnhofer sealed it for the Flyers.

With Lewis leading 18-14 in game three, Clarke rallied for eight of the next 11 points to take a 22-21 lead. Two kills apiece by Bryce Kingsley and Erik Vogt aided in the run, and Clarke never looked back.

A block by Kelnhofer and Vigansky busted a 9-9 deadlock in the fourth and final game, giving the Flyers a lead they did not relinquish. Two kills by Vigansky and three consecutive blocks, all including Sahagian, gave the Flyers a six-point cushion (17-11), and Clarke was forced to play catch-up the rest of the way.

Ed Frederick (13 kills) and Vogt (12 kills) paced the Crusaders' attack. Kingsley and Joe Collier each posted eight kills, and Pat McCarthy led the team with 12 digs.

The Flyers out-hit Clarke .268 to .171, including .438 to -.040 in the first game, and held an 11-10 edge in blocks.

Lewis returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Lindenwood at 2 pm.
