Flyers Swept by Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif.--The Lewis University men's volleyball team returned to the site of the 2003 NCAA championships for a non-conference match against Long Beach State.

No. 7-ranked Long Beach State (10-7) swept the Flyers (8-8) in a 30-20, 30-25, 30-19 victory.

Jared Dayton led Lewis with 17 kills while hitting .520 (17-4-25), but he was the only Flyer in double digits in kills. Jeff Soler added six kills and Enrique Escalante five. Lewis hit .219 (38-17-96) for the match and had 13 service errors.

Junior Robert Tarr was the go-to man Wednesday night finishing with 25 kills and a .475 hitting percentage. Yassir Sliti added 10 kills and Teddy Liles had seven kills and six total blocks. Senior Paul Munoz led the way defensively with 10 digs.

Long Beach hit .389 for the match and out-dug the Flyers 35 to 22.

The 49ers broke an early 3-3 tie in game one with a 9-2 run to grab a 12-5 lead. That lead grew to 17-8 as the 49ers won 30-20. Tarr had six kills in seven attempts and The Beach hit .483 (18-4-29) in the game.

Game two saw the Flyers jump out to a 5-2 lead. The 49ers rallied to tie the game at 8-8, only to see Lewis score four in a row and take a 12-8 lead. Long Beach promptly tied the game at 12-12. Tarr then took over the game for the 49ers. He had 12 kills in game two alone, including back-to-back kills to give the 49ers an 18-13 lead which they would never relinquish.

The Flyers will have a couple days off before it returns to action in its final match of its spring break trip. Lewis will visit California Baptist, the top ranked NAIA team in the nation, on Saturday, March 5.
