Loyola def. Cal Baptist 3-2; 23-30, 30-24, 31-29, 28-30, 15-8 ROMEOVILLE, Ill.--Loyola Chicago defeated California Baptist, the top-ranked NAIA school in the country, in five sets 23-30, 30-24, 31-29, 28-30, 15-8. The Ramblers (6-1) responded after a thumping in the opening game to win three of the final four games in the match. Loyola featured a well-rounded attack that saw four players with at least 12 kills and a brick wall for a block. The Ramblers recorded 17 team blocks and limited California Baptist (6-3) to a .205 hitting percentage. Loyola was led by Scott Greene, Chris Kozlarek and Chris Nelson who each had 13 kills. James Grunst added 12 kills and fronted the Loyola block, posting a match-high 13 blocks (4 solo, 9 assists). California Baptist was a two-man team on offense. Shaun Dyk (32 kills, .411 hitting percentage) and Shamsu Awudu (25 kills, .241 hitting percentage) accounted for 57 of the team's 78 kills and 110 of its 176 hitting attempts. Loyola will face Pacific at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, while California Baptist will meet Lewis at 6:30 p.m. |
