Jared Dayton leads Lewis with 66 kills on the season.

Flyers Stay Perfect With Sweep Of Mercyhurst

Jan. 19, 2007

Final Stats

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Jared Dayton led all players with 19 kills, as the Lewis Flyers swept Mercyhurst College 30-28, 30-16, 30-20 in the conference opener for both teams Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena.

The Flyers (4-0, 1-0) are off to their best start since the 1998 team opened the season 6-0. Mercyhurst dropped to 0-3 (0-1).

Dayton hit .294 (19-9-34) and collected two aces, two digs, two blocks (1BS-1BA). David Kelnhofer totaled eight kills on 11 attempts with just one error for a .636 hitting percentage. Alex Vigansky hit .600 with seven kills on 10 attempts and had four blocks, while Drew Pickering added six kills, seven digs, three aces and two blocks.

Nathan Klass and David Taylor each added four kills on four attempts, with Taylor also accumulating 25 assists. Nick Perakes' eight digs was a match high.

Lewis lagged behind throughout most of what was a close first game before a couple of Mercyhurst errors allowed Lewis to come to within one point of the lead at 24-23. A Dayton kill allowed Lewis to tie the game, and Vigansky put Lewis up 26-24 with a kill following a Mercyhurst setting error. The Flyers never trailed in games two or three.

Lewis hit .396 (54-18-91) for the match while holding the visiting Lakers to a .182 (35-19-88) effort. The Flyers held lopsided advantages in both aces (5-1) and digs (30-15), but the Lakers edged Lewis in total blocks (11-10).

The Flyers play their next five matches on the road, leading off with Carthage on Jan. 24.
