ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Fresh off the program's eighth Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship, the Lewis University men's soccer team on Monday received its official invite to the 32-team NCAA Division II Championship. The Flyers (17-4) are the No. 2 seed in the Great Lakes Region and will face No. 3 seed Southern Illinois Edwardsville (10-3-3) Friday at 4 p.m. CT at Wilder, Ky. After the Lewis-SIU Edwardsville tilt, top-seed and tournament host Northern Kentucky (20-1) will play No. 4 seed Gannon (16-2-1). The winners of Friday's games will square off on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT for a spot in the national quarterfinals against the Appalachian Region champion Nov. 17 or 18. This is the fifth NCAA appearance for Lewis. The Flyers reached the 2000 national semifinals in their first postseason competition and returned to the tournament in 2001, 2002 and 2004. Lewis and SIU-Edwardsville met once during the regular season with the host Cougars coming away with a 2-1 win back on Sept. 23. Following one more defeat in their next game, the Flyers turned their season around and have not lost since. Lewis closed out the regular season with seven straight wins and added three more to the streak during the GLVC Championship Tournament, culminating with the league title after a 1-0 upset over No. 1 Northern Kentucky on Sunday. |
