2009 All-GLVC Men's Soccer Teams in PDF Format
Romeoville, Ill. - The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Thursday (Oct. 29) that Lewis University's Nestor Hernandez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) and Zac Bond (Decatur, Ill./MacArthur) have been named to the All-GLVC Men's Soccer First Team, as voted on by the conference coaches. The coaches also selected Flyer goaltender Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) as the GLVC Freshman of the Year. "Postseason accolades are always nice, and I'm happy for the guys, but now we have to turn our focus towards Quincy on Sunday," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. This marks the third-consecutive season that Hernandez has been named to the All-GLVC First Team. The Berwyn, Ill., native has tied his career-high with a team-best 11 goals, including four assists, for a team-high 26 points. Hernandez is now ninth in school history with 80 career points in a Lewis uniform. Bond, an All-GLVC Third Team selection as a sophomore last season, is the lynchpin of a Flyer defense that held opponents 0.55 goals-per-game this season. Since his arrival in 2007, Flyer opponents have scored just 0.67 goals-per-game in 57 contests. The beneficiary of that stellar Lewis `D' has been Kieruzal, who posted a record of 12-3-1 in his rookie campaign, including nine shutouts. In 16 appearances, Kieruzal allowed just 0.56 goals-per-game, which was the 9th best in DII and had a save percentage of 87.3%, 7th best in the country. All-GLVC Second Team honorees include senior defender Alex Koprowski (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) and junior midfielders Mardoche Beya (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) and Jose Ibarra (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville). Koprowski joins Bond as another All-GLVC defender for the Flyers, as he helped hold Lewis opponents to 0.56 goals-per-game. He picked up his lone assist of the season last week on the Flyers' game-winning goal against Rockhurst. Beya has proved to be a welcome addition to the Flyer lineup after missing the first nine games of the season due to injury. Since his return, he has scored two goals, helping the Flyers win their last seven matches. Ibarra has seen action in all 16 games and has scored four points on the season, including the game-winning tally in a 1-0 win over Rockhurst on October 25th. Lewis returns to the pitch on Sunday at 12 p.m., as they welcome #6 Quincy in a GLVC Quarterfinal match-up at the Lewis Soccer Field. A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 10th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the sixth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
