Nestor Hernandez

Four Flyers Named All-GLVC

Oct. 26, 2007

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -

Lewis University's Nestor Hernandez, Cory Mastey, Anthony Szymel and Mardoche Beya have been named to the 2007 All-Great Lakes Valley Conference men's soccer team , as voted by the league's head coaches.

Hernandez, a sophomore midfielder, was selected to the first team. Mastey, a junior forward, and Szymel, a junior goalkeeper, made the second team. Beya, a freshman midfielder, was named to the third team.

Hernandez, in a breakout season, emerged as clutch offensive performer for the Flyers in 2007. During the regular season, he led the Flyers and tied for second in the conference in game-winning goals (6) and was second on the team in total goals (8) and assists (3). Hernandez scored five of his eight total goals during Lewis' regular-season ending seven-game win streak, igniting the lengthy run with an unassisted tally in the Flyers' 1-0 overtime win over then-ranked No. 21 Indianapolis on Sept. 30. Hernandez was named GLVC Player of the Week on Oct. 15 after scoring the game-winning marker in Lewis' 2-1 win over Drury and the game-tying goal in the Flyers' 3-2 comeback win over then-ranked No. 21 Rockhurst. This is the first All-GLVC honor of Hernandez's career.

Mastey led Lewis in scoring for a second consecutive season in 2007. He finished the regular season tied for fourth in the conference in goals (12) and tied for fifth in points (27). Mastey posted six multi-goal games during the regular season, and the Flyers went 7-0 when he tallied at least one goal. Mastey was named GLVC Player of the Week on Aug 26 after scoring four goals and one assist in the Flyers' first two games of the season. This is the second All-GLVC award of Mastey's career.

Szymel has put together the best season of his Lewis career in 2007, setting personal bests in goals-against average (0.89), saves (54), wins (14), save percentage (.783) and minutes (1524:55). He has four solo and three combined shutouts for the season, and he concluded the regular season on a seven-game win streak, allowing only three goals in 556:33, posting a 0.49 GAA and a .880 save percentage. Szymel ended the regular season ranked fourth in the conference in GAA among goalies with 1,000 or more minutes played. This is the second all-conference accolade of Szymel's career.

Beya made an immediate impact for the Flyers in 2007, starting in 14 games. He tied for second on the team in assists (3) and was fifth in goals (4), scoring the first game-winning goal of his career in the Flyers' thrilling come-from-behind win over Rockhurst on Oct. 14. Beya finished the regular season with 23 points and a .478 shot-on-goal percentage.

No. 15 Lewis (14-4) begins its GLVC tournament run on Sunday, hosting Bella mine at 2:00 p.m.
