Flyers, Rivermen Set For Quarterfinal Game

Oct. 29, 2003

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Lewis will host Missouri-St. Louis Sunday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. in a Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Soccer Championship quarterfinal game.

The game will be played at the Lewis Soccer Field on the University's main campus in Romeoville, and admission is free.

Lewis (9-5-2, 8-2 GLVC), which tied Southern Indiana for second place in the GLVC regular-season standings, is the No. 3 seed in the seven-team tournament. The Flyers have won seven of their last eight games and are aiming for the program's first GLVC championship since 2001 and seventh overall.

Missouri-St. Louis (6-12-1, 4-5-1), the No. 6 seed, has dropped its last four games. However, the Rivermen's last three losses have been 1-0 in double overtime to GLVC No. 2 seed Southern Indiana; 1-0 to undefeated Truman State, the No. 3-ranked team in NCAA Division II; and 2-1 to 22nd-ranked Gannon.

UMSL also has 1-0 losses to 11th-ranked SIU Edwardsville and 25th-ranked Rockhurst. Lewis blanked UMSL 3-0 in the teams' regular-season meeting.

Lewis has won four straight over Missouri-St. Louis since the Rivermen registered a 2-1 upset in double overtime in the 1999 GLVC Championship quarterfinals.

In other GLVC quarterfinal games Sunday, No. 2 seed Southern Indiana hosts No. 7 Bellarmine and No. 4 Wisconsin-Parkside hosts No. 5 Quincy. No. 1 SIU Edwardsville received a bye and will host the semifinals Nov. 7 at 5 and 7:30 p.m. and the championship game Nov. 9 at noon.
