QUINCY - Lewis turned in a typically strong defensive effort, but Quincy scored an early goal Sunday and made it stand up for a 1-0 win in a Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Soccer Championship quarterfinal game. Quincy's Justin Bower, with an assist from Scott Smith, scored his first goal of the season at 10:02. Lewis goalkeeper Brian Byrne stopped all three Quincy shots on goal in the second half to keep the Flyers close. But the Hawks (11-4-4), who will play Southern Illinois Edwardsville in Friday's GLVC semifinals, also were up to the task on defense. Lewis concluded the season with an 11-8 record. The Flyers enjoyed a 14th consecutive winning season and a 14th consecutive season with at least 10 victories. |
