EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Brian Byrne made eight saves and Craig McIntosh gave Lewis a first-half lead, but Southern Illinois Edwardsville rallied for a 2-1 victory Friday night in a Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Soccer Championship semifinal game. Fifth-seeded Lewis concluded its season at 12-6-1, marking the 15th consecutive campaign the Flyers have registered a winning record and posted 10 or more victories. SIU Edwardsville, the tournament's host and top seed and the No. 6-ranked team in NCAA Division II, improved to 13-3-3 with its 10th straight win. The Cougars will meet third-seeded Wisconsin-Parkside in Sunday's title game. McIntosh tallied his third goal of the season, beating SIUE netminder Nicholas Frasca with a header from 10 yards out, at 27:33 to put the Flyers on top. SIUE erased the Lewis lead at 40:15 when Kevin Thibodeau, assisted by Dustin Attarian and Randy Roy, scored from close range. The Cougars netted the game-winner early in the second half as Thibodeau (Attarian) collected his team-leading seventh goal of the season at 47:33. Byrne's eight saves, which tied his career high, kept the Flyers in the game despite SIUE's 19-8 advantage in total shots. |
