EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Sometimes the final score of a game doesn't accurately reflect the competitive level of the contest. Such was the case Sunday in the Lewis University men's soccer team's 2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Southern Indiana. The Flyers (10-7, 8-5 GLVC) dominated the Screaming Eagles in every category, recording overwhelming advantages in total shots (34-5), shots on goal (18-2) and corner kicks (7-0). Only a heroic 15-save effort by goalkeeper Jake Bryan kept USI (5-12, 3-9) in the game. TIto Lara, assisted by Neil Van Huis, scored his fifth goal of the season at 83:10 to win it for the Flyers, who assured themselves of a 14th consecutive winning season and 14th consecutive season with at least 10 victories. Cory Mastey drilled home his second goal of the season to give Lewis a 1-0 lead at the 8:57 mark, with Lara picking up his team-leading sixth assist of the year. Michael Dugger's third goal of the season at 14:00 pulled USI even. Lewis finished fifth in the GLVC regular-season standings. Following Wednesday's non-conference game against Upper Iowa, the Flyers travel to Quincy on Sunday for a GLVC Championship tournament quarterfinal game. |
