Oct. 15, 2006

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Lewis clinched a berth in the eight-team Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Soccer Championship with a 2-0 win at Drury Sunday afternoon.

The Flyers (11-5, 8-5 GLVC), who finished fifth in the conference standings, will travel to fourth-place Rockhurst (9-5-3, 8-3-2 GLVC) for a GLVC Championship first-round game next Sunday. Game time will be announced later. Rockhurst defeated Lewis 2-0 in the teams' Oct. 13 regular-season meeting.

Other first-round games next Sunday are No. 8 Missouri-St. Louis at No. 1 Southern Illinois Edwardsville, No. 7 Indianapolis at No. 2 Northern Kentucky and No. 6 Missouri-Rolla at No. 3 Wisconsin-Parkside. The semifinals (Oct. 27) and championship game (Oct. 29) will be played at SIU Edwardsville, or at the home field of the highest remaining seed should SIUE lose in the first round.

Lewis goalkeeper Brian Byrne matched his career high by making eight big saves, including five in the second half, and recorded his second shutout of the season. The shutout was the Flyers' seventh of the season overall and first on the road.

Cory Mastey scored the game-winning goal early in the second half, giving him team bests of eight total goals and five game-winners this season. With the help of Joey De Francesco's first collegiate assist, Mastey beat Drury goalkeeper Cesar Cereijo at 49:42 for a 1-0 Lewis lead.

Kipp Cartwright's second goal of the season, unassisted, gave the Flyers a 2-0 cushion at 85:41.

Lewis concludes the regular season Wednesday with a non-conference game at Upper Iowa.
