ROMEOVILLE - The Lewis University men's soccer team overcame big deficits in shots and corner kicks and held on for a 1-1 tie against Great Lakes Valley Conference leader Southern Illinois Edwardsville Sunday afternoon. The game matched two of the nation's top NCAA Division II teams. SIUE came in ranked No. 6 nationally and No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region, while Lewis owns the No. 12 national ranking and is tied for second in the region. The Flyers (11-1-2, 4-1-2 GLVC) scored first when Justin Sanabria netted his sixth goal of the season at 35:37 with an assist from Cathal Brady. The Cougars (11-1-1, 6-0-1 GLVC) pulled even late in the second half on Brian Higgins' fourth goal of the year, with Kevin Thibodeau and Mike Banner assisting. SIUE gained advantages in total shots (23-9), shots on goal (10-4) and corner kicks (12-4). Lewis goalkeeper Jordan Gustman was up to the challenge, however, tying his season high of nine saves.
