Flyers Back On Track, Beat Truman 1-0

Oct. 8, 2006

Box Score

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - An early goal by Kipp Cartwright, the first of his collegiate career, gave the Lewis University men's soccer team a 1-0 non-conference win over Truman State on Sunday.

Cartwright drilled the ball past Truman State goalkeeper Ryan Farrar on a direct kick at 4:38, and the Lewis defense did the rest as the Flyers (10-4) snapped a two-game losing streak.

The victory was the 200th career triumph for Evan Fiffles, who has led Lewis to a winning season and at least 10 wins in each of his 15 years as head coach. Fiffles owns a 200-80-23 record (.698) at the Flyer helm.

Lewis dominated play in the first half, earning advantages of 12-3 in total shots and 8-1 in shots on goal. Truman State (6-6-2) turned the tables a bit in the second half with a 9-4 edge in total shots, but the Flyer defense was able to preserve its sixth shutout of the season.

Brian Byrne, making his first appearance of the season in goal, registered three saves. Mark Switalski tallied game highs of five total shots and three shots on goal in his first collegiate start.

The Flyers return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play next weekend, traveling to Rockhurst on Friday and to Drury on Sunday for two crucial games that conclude GLVC regular-season play.
