ST. LOUIS - Lewis was victimized by a hot Missouri-St. Louis team on Sunday, dropping a 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference men's soccer decision to the host Rivermen. Missouri-St. Louis, which improved to 5-3-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the GLVC, earned a 1-1 tie with 25th-ranked Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday. Lewis (8-2, 6-2 GLVC) entered Sunday's game ranked 13th in NCAA Division II. Colin Huber scored his third goal of the season, unassisted, at the 52:11 mark, and goalkeeper Zach Hoette made four saves to preserve the upset for UMSL. The Flyers, led by Cory Mastey's six shots, outgunned UMSL 11-5 including a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. Lewis also earned a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Although the loss dropped Lewis from second to third place in the GLVC behind Wisconsin-Parkside (6-1-1) and Drury (5-1-1), the Flyers remain well within reach of finishing atop the league standings. In fact, five teams are within 1½ games of first place. Lewis hosts conference opponents Bellarmine on Friday and Northern Kentucky on Sunday. Game time is noon both days. |
