Cathal Brady

Brady's Late Goal Propels Flyers

Sept. 11, 2005

Box Score

ROMEOVILLE - It was quality that mattered, not quantity, for the Lewis men's soccer team in Sunday's Great Lakes Valley Conference showdown against Rockhurst.

The Flyers recorded just two shots on goal against the visiting Hawks, who were fresh off Friday's 3-1 upset of 10th-ranked Wisconsin-Parkside. Both shots found the back of the net, however, and Lewis came away with a 2-1 victory that gave the Flyers (4-1, 2-0) a share of the early conference lead with Northern Kentucky.

The win was the Flyers' third in succession, all by one goal. Rockhurst, one of three new GLVC members, fell to 3-2 and 1-1.

The game-winning goal was scored in dramatic fashion. Cathal Brady raced past a Rockhurst defender to gather a ball that bounced high over the defender's head, then fired a shot from about 50 feet away on the left side that curled around Rockhurst goalkeeper Adrian Winnubst with just 1:25 to play. The goal was Brady's team-leading third of the year.

Rockhurst took a 1-0 lead at the 12:37 mark when Haggai Leboo headed in a corner kick from Rhodri Payne. The Flyers answered at 27:28 when, following a scramble, Jorge De Jesus collected the loose ball and sent it past Winnubst for his second goal of the season.

Lewis goalkeeper Brian Byrne made six saves, with just two stops coming after halftime as a hustling Flyer defense slowed the Rockhurst attack in the final 45 minutes. Byrne also deflected a ball inadvertently sent toward the goal by a teammate in the hectic final seconds.

The Flyers conclude a three-game home stand Thursday with a 4 p.m. battle against archrival Wisconsin-Parkside.
