Flyers Triumph In Double Overtime

Sept. 10, 2006

Box Score

RENSSELAER, Ind. - A relentless attack paid big, albeit unusual, dividends for the Lewis University men's soccer team Sunday in a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Saint Joseph's.

The 15th-ranked Flyers shook off a late Saint Joseph's goal that forced overtime and improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Saint Joseph's slipped to 1-5-1 overall and 0-4 in the GLVC.

The game-winning tally was an own goal that came at 3:47 of the second extra session, but the Flyers did their part to earn it with constant offensive pressure. For the game, Lewis gained advantages of 28-8 in total shots (15-2 in the first half), 17-6 in shots on goal and 9-2 in corner kicks (6-2 in the second half).

Lewis took a 1-0 lead when Cory Mastey scored his team-leading fourth goal of the year on a penalty kick at 41:04. Nick Filloon's third goal of the season at 83:39 tied it for the Pumas.

Flyer goalkeeper Anthony Szymel made five saves while SJC's Dan Ford stopped 15 Lewis shots on net. Mastey and Nestor Hernandez registered six and five shots on goal, respectively.

Lewis hosts Quincy on Friday and 11th-ranked Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Sunday in a pair of GLVC games that start at noon.
