No. 3 NKU Edges No. 16 Lewis, 1-0

Sept. 7, 2007

Box Score

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - In a highly physical confrontation between two nationally-ranked and unbeaten teams, No. 3 Northern Kentucky scored early in the first half and defeated No. 16 Lewis 1-0, Friday night in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both schools.

The Flyers (4-1-0, 0-1-0 GLVC) lost for the first time this season, while the Norse remained perfect at 5-0-0 (1-0-0 GLVC).

Freshman Steven Beattie gave the host Norse all they needed when he knocked an 18-yard shot into the lower right corner past Flyers' goalkeeper Anthony Szymel at 6:13. It was Beattie's first collegiate goal. Junior Eric Ashworth earned the assist.

Junior Cory Mastey led Lewis with three shots, including two on goal, but for the first time all season, the Flyers' leading scorer was held without a goal. He had a chance to send the game into overtime with a shot in the final minute of regulation, but the blast went wide.

Freshman Jose Ibarra also registered a shot for the Flyers. Szymel made four saves in the losing effort.

Freshman goalie Michael Lavric (2-0-0) had two saves in the win for the Norse.

NKU fired 14 shots compared to four by Lewis.

Northern Kentucky committed 29 fouls, while Lewis had 19. The Flyers were hit with one red and two yellow cards. NKU had three yellow cards.

The Flyers play next at Bellarmine on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
