WINONA, Minn. - Junior Jason Genova matched career highs with 31 points and seven 3-pointers, but No. 5 Winona State hit 10 treys of their and held off Lewis 84-76, Tuesday evening in non-conference action at McCown Gymnasium. Genova shot at a torrid pace in the first half, hitting 6-of-7 from 3-point range. He scored 24 of Lewis' 38 points, helping the Flyers keep pace with a Warriors' team which also drained six 3-pointers in the half. The Warriors ran out to leads of seven and 10 points in the first half, but in both instances Lewis was able to rally back. After Winona State jumped out to a seven-point lead to start the game, Lewis came back with seven unanswered, tying the game at 11 with a Genova tip-in. When the Warriors built a 26-16 advantage, Lewis scored 13 of the game's next 16 and tied it with a Genova trey at 5:16 of the first. Genova gave Lewis its only lead of the game with 3:25 to play in the half when he hit his sixth trey. Winona State fired right back with a 3-ball from Josh Korth, and by halftime led 41-38. The Warriors scored the first eight points of the second half to take their largest lead of the game at 49-38, and Lewis could not make up the deficit. The Flyers got to within three points with 10:17 to play, but couldn't get any closer. Winona State's John Smith, who led the team with 17 points and 10 boards, put the hosts back up by five with a layup. The Warriors maintained at least a two-possession advantage the rest of the way. Genova finished the game 11-of-23 from the field, and he matched freshman Lonnie Lawrence, Jr. with a team-best nine rebounds. Lawrence also added 10 points, scoring in double figures for the first time in his career. Brandon Dagans saw 23 minutes of action after returning from injury. He had 14 points, hitting 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Smith was one of five Warriors to score in double figures. David Johnson matched Smith for the team high with 17 points. Winona State shot 46 percent from the floor, compared to 40.6 by the Flyers, and the Warriors held a 43-37 edge on the glass. The Flyers (6-2) return to action on Friday, hosting Hillsdale at 5:30 p.m. |
