Flyers Make Impressive Comeback But Fall

Jan. 27, 2005

Box Score

ROMEOVILLE - Lewis overcame a big early deficit and challenged Indianapolis well into the second half, but the visiting Greyhounds assembled a late offensive outburst and pulled away for a 71-52 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory Thursday night at Neil Carey Arena.

Indianapolis (13-5, 8-3 GLVC) sprinted to a 16-2 lead in less than six minutes, only to see Lewis (7-12, 2-10 GLVC) fight back to trail just 32-25 at halftime.

The Flyers closed the half with an 8-2 run in the last 1:37. Anthony Scala keyed the run with two 3-pointers, the second one an off-balance buzzer-beater from the right corner off a long inbounds pass from Randy Wright.

Lewis began the second half with layups by DeAndre Williams and Pat Monaghan, a John Loeffelholz free throw and another Williams layup to slice the Indy lead to 34-32 with 17:47 to play.

The Greyhounds, winners in eight of their last nine outings, regrouped and established a 45-36 advantage at the 12:52 mark. The Flyers responded quickly with a Scala trey and Williams' conventional 3-point play, and the Indy lead was sliced to 45-42 with 11:54 remaining.

That's when Indianapolis senior guard David Logan caught fire. Logan, the second-leading scorer in NCAA Division II at 28.3 points per game, hit a 3-pointer on the Greyhounds' next possession to ignite a 22-2 barrage over the next eight minutes that secured the win for the visitors. Logan tallied 14 of the first 16 points in that flurry.

Loeffelholz (10 points), Scala (9) and Williams (9) led the Flyer scoring effort. Williams had a team-high six rebounds.

Indianapolis was led by Lawrence Barnes (22 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals), Logan (19 points, 5 assists) and Justin Barnard (12 points, 9 rebounds). Jon LaBad and Mike Adibe grabbed 6 rebounds apiece.

Lewis returns to action Saturday, hosting Saint Joseph's at 3 p.m.
