ROMEOVILLE - Lewis University senior first baseman Jim Gabriel concluded his collegiate baseball career Sunday with a 5-for-6 performance in the Flyers' doubleheader loss to Quincy.

The visiting Hawks won game one 5-2 and took the nightcap 4-2.

Gabriel was 2-for-2 with a double and a walk in the opener and 3-for-4 in game two. Senior left fielder Darryl Jenkins also had a productive final outing, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI in game one and 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the finale.

In the seven-inning opener, Quincy (36-16, 33-13 GLVC) did all its damage in the second inning. All five runs were unearned off Lewis starter Ryan Duran (0-5), who allowed nine hits and three walks while striking out three in 6 1/3 innings.

The Flyers (10-46, 9-39 GLVC) scored single runs in the third and fourth. Kevin Tyrrell singled with two outs and scored on Jenkins' double in the third. In the fourth, a single by Brandon Niewinski, a double by Tim Bingham and a walk to Gabriel loaded the bases for Phil Marchinski, who delivered an RBI single.

Nick Dunning (6-5) worked 5 2/3 innings and allowed nine hits and one walk while fanning eight. Brad Shaeffer recorded his fifth save.

In the nightcap, the Hawks plated an unearned run in the fifth, took a 3-0 lead in the seventh on Chris Scoggins' two-run homer and added an unearned run later in the same inning.

The Flyers got on the board with an unearned run in the seventh. Victor Naut doubled and Gabriel singled to start the inning, and Naut scored on an error.

Lewis drew a run closer in the eighth. Billy Duffy led off with a single and came around on Jenkins' one-out double.

Quincy's Greg Dowdall (4-2) tossed eight innings to earn the victory. Dowdall struck out six, walked two and yielded seven hits. Shaeffer pitched around a leadoff walk in the ninth to pick up his third save of the series and sixth of the season.

Flyer starter Jon Guzzo (3-7) pitched very well over 5 2/3 innings, fanning four and scattering five hits. Matt Andrzejewski pitched two perfect relief innings.
