ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Joe Walsh tossed a stellar three-hitter as the Lewis University baseball team edged Kentucky Wesleyan 2-1 Sunday to gain a split of a doubleheader. Kentucky Wesleyan won the opener, a Great Lakes Valley Conference game, 3-2. Walsh (2-1) went the seven-inning distance and struck out three while issuing just one walk. The only run he allowed was an unearned tally in the fourth inning. Lewis (7-46, 5-34 GLVC) scored both its runs in the third. Ryan McManaman and Chris Brigham were hit by a pitch and advanced on a groundout by Bryan Druktenis. Billy Duffy's perfect drag bunt down the first-base line, his second bunt single of the game, plated McManaman, and Brigham scored the second run on a double steal. In the Kentucky Wesleyan fourth, Walsh still was in a jam after the Panthers scored. But with runners at first and second and one out, the senior right-hander retired the next two batters to avoid further damage. Walsh stranded four more KWC runners over the final three innings. Mike Smith doubled for the Flyers. Senior right-hander Matt Rolle turned in a strong nine-inning complete game in the opener. Rolle yielded two earned runs and eight hits and fanned five. Lewis took a 2-1 lead in the third. With one out, Druktenis singled and Duffy walked. Smith followed with a single that scored Druktenis, and Duffy scooted home on Ryan Duran's groundout. Kentucky Wesleyan (16-40, 12-26 GLVC) pulled even in the sixth and scored the winning run in the eighth. Brigham had two hits including a double, and Joe Carbone added two hits to the Flyers' nine-hit attack. Lewis concludes the season at home Monday with a non-conference doubleheader against Oakland City. Game time is 1 p.m. |
