Crettol's Pitching Gem Gives Flyers Split

April 30, 2005

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

OWENSBORO, Ky. - Jon Crettol pitched a 3-hit shutout Saturday to give the Lewis University baseball team a 2-0 win over Kentucky Wesleyan and a split of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader.

In the opener - scheduled for seven innings -- Kentucky Wesleyan scored an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth off Flyer starter Kevin Jakubauskas for a 1-0 victory.

By GLVC rules, game two was shortened to seven innings because the first game went extra frames.

Crettol (3-6) faced the minimum through five innings with the help of catcher Brandon Niewinski, who gunned down two potential base-stealers. The freshman right-hander struck out seven and did not issue a walk, and all three Kentucky Wesleyan hits were singles.

Crettol got into trouble just once, as a single and a hit-by-pitch gave the Panthers (22-25, 18-16) two on with nobody out in the sixth. But the freshman right-hander fanned the next two hitters and got the third out on a ground ball.

Lewis (9-37, 7-25) was retired in order in every inning except the fourth, but unlike KWC in the sixth, the Flyers cashed in their only serious opportunity. Singles by Mike Smith and Niewinski put runners at the corners with nobody out. A single by Victor Naut scored Smith and Andy Radak's squeeze bunt plated Niewinski.

Although Jakubauskas (3-7) was outdueled by Kentucky Wesleyan's Brandon Brooks, the Flyers' senior right-hander turned in another stellar performance. He surrendered just five hits, all singles, and two walks.

Lewis managed just two hits in the opener, a second-inning double by Phil Marchinski and a fifth-inning single by Jim Gabriel.

The teams play another doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon.
