ROMEOVILLE - Tommy Rawski and Jon Guzzo combined on a one-hitter Wednesday to lead the Lewis University baseball team to a 1-0 win over Saint Joseph's, giving the Flyers a split of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader.

In the opener, scheduled for seven innings but stretched to nine, Saint Joseph's pulled out a 5-4 victory.

Rawski (1-1) was in command during his 5 1/3 innings of work. He allowed just one hit - a scratch single that got behind Lewis second baseman Brandon Niewinski as Niewinski was moving to cover second on a Saint Joseph's steal attempt - and two walks while striking out five.

Guzzo, who struck out four in 1 2/3 innings and collected his first save, entered with a runner at first and one out in the sixth. He walked Kevin Diete, and both runners advanced on a passed ball. But Guzzo fanned Ryan Murray and, after intentionally walking Mike Marshall, got Jim Jaworski on strikes to end the Puma threat.

The Flyers (7-35, 6-28 GLVC) scored an unearned run in the fifth off Mark Lowry (2-2), who gave just two hits and two walks while recording nine strikeouts. Jim Gabriel drew a leadoff walk and was forced at second on Ryan Reynolds' sacrifice attempt. After Ryan Duran walked, Reynolds moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Brian Clancy's sharp single to right.

Darryl Jenkins had the other hit in the nightcap for Lewis, extending his hitting streak to nine games. Jenkins has hit safely in 12 of his last 13 outings.

Saint Joseph's (22-20, 19-19 GLVC) scored a first-inning run in the opener, and Lewis tied it in the third and took a 2-1 lead in the fifth.

Billy Duffy led off the third with an infield hit, hustled to third on Phil Marchinski's single to left and scored on Jenkins' sacrifice fly. Victor Naut hit his team-leading fifth home run, a solo shot to right-center, with one out in the fifth.

The Pumas retaliated by scoring three times in the sixth, but the Flyers rallied with two outs in the bottom of the inning and tied it with two runs of their own.

Reynolds doubled and scored on Duffy's single. Following a pitching change, Duffy stole second, advanced to third on Marchinski's infield hit and scored on Jenkins' single.

Both teams were retired in order in the seventh. In the eighth, Lewis reliever Joe Walsh (1-9) got out of a two-on, two-out jam by striking out Jaworski, but the Flyers went in order again in their half of the inning.

Tony Cunningham started the decisive ninth inning with a single, advanced on Joe Panozzo's sacrifice and scored on Danny Flores' double. Further damage was prevented later when, with runners at second and third and one out, Mike Victor flied to center and Duffy gunned down Flores at the plate for an inning-ending double play.

Unfortunately for Lewis, Chase Sonen came on and retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn his third save.

Flyer starter Jon Crettol allowed four runs, eight hits and a walk and fanned three in 5 2/3 innings. Winner Clay Tingley (3-0), who relieved starter Eric Fussell, yielded two hits and struck out four in 2 1/3 innings.

Duffy led the Flyers' 12-hit attack with a 3-for-4 effort, while Marchinski, Jenkins, Naut and Reynolds tallied two hits apiece.

Lewis travels to Southern Indiana this weekend for a four-game GLVC series.
