Tanton's Four-Hit Masterpiece Gives Flyers Split

March 21, 2004

ROMEOVILLE - Matt Tanton tossed a complete-game four-hitter, retiring 23 of the last 24 hitters he faced, to propel Lewis to a 9-1 victory over Southern Indiana and a split of Sunday's Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball doubleheader.

Southern Indiana won the seven-inning opener 6-2 behind the four-hit pitching of Adam Summers.

Tanton (2-1) allowed a one-out solo home run to Mike Kottmeyer in the second to tie the score 1-1, and Adam Stone followed with a double.

From there, Tanton mowed down the next 22 USI hitters before Noah Wetzel singled with two outs in the ninth. The senior right-hander struck out Matt Keener to end the game.

Tanton fanned four and did not issue a walk.

Lewis (8-11, 2-2 GLVC) scored an unearned run in the first, then took a 2-1 lead in the second on Brian Davis' first collegiate home run.

The Flyers scored twice in the fourth. Davis and Darryl Jenkins singled with one out, and Davis scored on a throwing error by the USI catcher on a double steal. Dave Tolchin's perfectly placed bunt single plated Jenkins.

Lewis made it 6-1 in the sixth when, with two outs, Mike Smith's double scored Jenkins and Andy Sweet's single drove in Smith. Lewis gave Tanton some extra insurance with three runs in the eighth, as Chris Carbonaro drew a bases-loaded walk and two more runs scored on wild pitches.

Sweet, Davis and Jenkins each had two hits for Lewis in the nightcap.

In the opener, USI (7-16, 3-7 GLVC) scored once in the first, twice in the third and three times in the fifth to support Summers (1-1), who walked just one and struck out five.

The Flyers scored an unearned run in the third and added a run in the sixth when Davis' two-out single scored Victor Naut, who had doubled.

Lewis starter Chad Dahlman (0-2) went 2 2/3 innings and took the loss. Reliever Justin Barr allowed just one hit and fanned four over the final 2 2/3 innings.

The Flyers host Wisconsin-Parkside Wednesday in a GLVC doubleheader. Game one begins at 1 p.m.
